In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Perron moved to an old farm house in Harrisville, Rhode Island, along with their five daughters. During the first day, this family move went smoothly, despite their dog, Sadie, refused to enter the house and one of their daughters find an entrance to the basement.
The next morning, Carolyn woke up with mysterious bruises and found Sadie lying dead outside the house. Over the next few days, a variety of mysterious events occur. These events culminated in an evening when Roger was in Florida, Carolyn locked in the basement and a supernatural creature that looks like an old woman attacked one of his daughters.
Carolyn contacted paranormal investigator named Ed and Lorraine Warren for help. Pair Warren began an investigation and concluded that the house may need a rite of exorcism, but the ritual could not be done prior to obtaining approval from the Catholic Church.
While investigating the history of the house, Ed and Lorraine know that the house was owned by a person who is suspected witch named Bathsheba. Bathsheba sacrifice their children to the devil, then committed suicide and condemns all those who tried to take the land. The soil was once 200 hectares more, but have been divided. They both also know that a lot of reports of killings and suicides that occur in homes built on land that was once owned by Bathsheba.
Ed and Lorraine back home and try to collect evidence in order to obtain permission from the Catholic Church to perform an exorcism ritual. One of Carolyn's daughter, Cindy, walking in his sleep and finds a secret door behind the wardrobe. Lorraine entered the door and fell into the basement. There, he witnessed the spirits of those who once possessed Bathsheba. All of them are mothers who are possessed by Bathsheba to kill their children. Meanwhile, other Perron daughter was attacked and dragged along the floor by an invisible force
Lorraine and Ed managed to gather evidence for the Church to perform an exorcism ritual, while the Perron family took refuge in a hotel. Meanwhile, the daughter of Ed and Lorraine were attacked in their homes by the spirits who come from homes Perron.
Carolyn, who had been possessed by Bathsheba, brought his two daughters, Christine and April, returned to the house. Ed, Lorraine, two of their assistants, and Roger hurried to catch up and find Carolyn was trying to stab Christine. After crippling Carolyn, Ed decided to perform an exorcism ritual alone, but Carolyn managed to escape and tried to kill April. Lorraine succeeded in diverting Carolyn by way of reminding the memories, especially with his family, so Ed managed to finish the ritual exorcism and save Carolyn and her daughter.
